The Stone Steps, At The Bank Of River Ganga

A city set on the bank of River Ganga. Varanasi is Home to several Ghat. It is the Ghats that give the city as much of its character as do its Temple, and its narrow lanes.

For most to-be visitors to Varanasi, the first picture that they possibly see of the city is of the Ghats on the riverbank. Elders in the city describe the city, as it lies stretched by the river, as having five bodily parts. Assi is its head, Dasaswamedh its chest, Manikarnika its navel, panchganga the thighs, and Adi keshav its feet.

Significance Of The Ghat’s

The Religious, Cultural, Traditional, and Historical significance of the Divine Ghats of Varanasi. It is at the root of Hinduism that in this city of Ghats, the soul leaves the human body and rises up towards salvation.
I believe it is my duty to take you, my readers, and coming guest on a trip of some of the most important Ghats, beginning at the southern end of the city, moving towards to north.

SAAMNE GHAT-    The furthermost ghat upstream is the Saamne Ghat. The Ghat has little religious significance for most of Banarsis.

ASSI GHAT-   Assi is one of the important Ghats situated in the southern end of the city, at the Sangam (confluence) of river Ganga, and Assi. There is a tale associated with this Ghat that is, Goddess Durga after killing the demons Shumbha, and Nishumbha threw her sword (Khadga) away to a place, which resulted in the origin of River Assi. The Ghat named here due to the river Assi is Assi Ghat.

GANGA MAHAL GHAT-    Made in1830 by the patronage of Maharaja Banaras, this is an extended part of the Assi Ghat.

TULSI GHAT-      This ghat is famous because of its association with Tulsidas (1547-1663). the great Bhakti poet who wrote Ramcharitmanas.

This Ghat is important for cultural and religious activities as during the month of Kartik (October-November) for about a fortnight. Krishna Leela, a thearitical Performed based on the life of Lord Krishna, is performed every year at the Tulsi Ghat.

JAIN GHAT-    This Ghat is an extended part of the preceding Ghat, riding a Crocodile, in a small shrine, along with an image of Shiva and Ganesha.

CHET SINGH GHAT-     This is a historical Ghat with a Fort, named after King Chet Singh who fought against Warren Hesting in 1781.

SHIVALA GHAT-  This Ghat was built by Raja Balwant Singh, the Maharaja of Banaras between 1738 to 1770. Brahmendra Math, established by him here, today is a popular place for south     Indian pilgrims.

HANUMAN GHAT-   Here lies a temple dedicated to God Hanuman, built by Tulsidas, and shrines honoring the nine Planets. there is also a temple of Rameshwar, an Incarnation of Shiva worshipped by south Indians.

KARNATAKA GHAT-   Built by the Maharaja of Mysore in 1920, this Ghat houses a Sati shrine. there is also a small temple dedicated to one of the theBhairavas, (Ruru).

HARISHCHANDRA GHAT-  Named after the legendary King Harischchandra, this is an ancient ghat and one of the two cremation Ghats on the Ganga in Varanasi. 

Harishchandra was the twenty-eighth king of the Solar dynasty, ancestor of God Rama.

KEDAR GHAT-   This Ghat is meticulously eulogized, in the Kashi Khand. At the top lies the temple of Kedareshwar, the patron deity of the southern sacred segment of old Kashi.

DASHASWAMEDH GHAT-

The main Ghat, At the center. The Ghat where God Brahma performed a ritual (Aswamwdh agaya) for ten times, and the place where the evening Aarti/ Prayer is performed every evening.

MANIKARNIKA GHAT

The most famous ghat in Varanasi is the Manikarnika Ghat. This is a place of cremation by the Hindus. If you are ready to experience with all boldness how it feels to see the continuous cremations taking place, this could be the place. You might wonder if this is a place worth the visit on a vacation, you may change your mind once you are here.

It gives a view of life in its full nakedness and seeing it for real that this is the ultimate makes you experience a unique feeling. Knowing about life is different and seeing so many dead bodies cremated and how it just happens as a routine is altogether a different STORY.
